The Client: A leading and fast-growing national specialty retailer, cataloger and e-tailer of women's apparel, shoes and accessories.
Client Need: The client faced challenging demand growth at the retail level. Fulfilling this growth could only be met by adding more labor in the RF packing operation given existing distribution constraints. J. Jill’s distribution executives were looking for a way to pack-out more stores with fewer people. Objectives included: significant productivity increases, minimal labor retraining requirements, and the solution had to work with existing Material Handling Equipment (MHE) without needing significant modifications.
Solution: After a thorough and intensive market analysis wherein J.Jill ROI-evaluated four pack-to-light vendors, AL Systems’ pack-to-light solution was selected. The solution incorporated 350+ bin display modules (lights) managed by a scalable software platform designed to accommodate future expansion. Lights were trough-mounted to existing two-tier store shelving. The low impact approach achieved all of the Company's objectives: fast time to install; maintained a familiar order-fulfillment look and feel to minimize retraining; and minimized MHE modifications.
Results: The high-throughput pack system was implemented by AL Systems two weeks ahead of schedule and resulted in immediate and dramatic productivity increases. In addition, the system resulted in superior order-fulfillment accuracy and offered the flexibility to accommodate retail growth for the foreseeable future.
